What is the ‘University of the Third Age or U3A?
The University of the Third Age (U3A) started in France 1973 and now has a presence across Europe as well as Australia, New Zealand, Cyprus and South Africa. Essentially U3A encourages the sharing of knowledge and experience amongst senior citizens with the aim of bringing about lifestyle enhancement and lifelong learning. In Ireland it operates under the aegis of Age Action Ireland.
Monkstown U3A
In keeping with the ethos of U3A we recognise the importance of achieving personal change and empowerment in the lives of all by engagement with each other, sharing experience and skills and taking part in activities that can be both informative and new to the individual.
Monkstown U3A is one of a growing number of groups throughout Ireland that aims to bring people together, in a friendly and open environment, in their local area to share interests, skills and experience in an informal setting. No qualifications are required to join the University of the Third Age (U3A).
We meet in Newtownpark Pastoral Centre, in the grounds of Guardian Angels Church, Newtownpark Avenue, Blackrock, Co. Dublin
Together we create a programme based on members’ interests and meet on a regular basis in Newtownpark Pastoral Centre . Our meetings are held approximately every two weeks on Tuesdays at 10:30am with a short break in summertime. There is time to meet and enjoy the company and interests of other members.
Recognising the importance of lifelong learning, our programme consists of talks and visits that are of interest and benefit to members. All members are encouraged to select topics and to share their knowledge and expertise in an open and comfortable setting.
The U3A movement is voluntary, self-funded and open to all. There is an annual membership fee of €40.00 per person.
Membership is currently open. If you wish to join please email us at u3a.monkstown@gmail.com.
